UCO encourages healthy living with nutrition events in March

Special to The Sun

EDMOND — The University of Central Oklahoma Healthy Campus Initiative will host a series of events throughout March for National Nutrition Month.

A nutrition and education information campaign from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, National Nutrition Month encourages making informed food choices and developing sound eating and physical activity habits.

This year, Central’s campaign is “Color Me Healthy,” highlighting the importance of increasing fruit and vegetable consumption among the campus community.

Events begin at noon Monday with “Supermarket Smarts” where UCO Peer Health Leaders give participants tips on how to navigate and choose foods in grocery stores. “Supermarket Smarts” will continue each Monday throughout March and be at the Edmond Walmart Neighborhood Market on Second Street. To reserve a spot at one of these events, email

The UCO Campus Cook program also will present a series of healthy cooking demonstrations. The first demonstration will show participants how to make Mexican Cuisine on March 6 and the second will instruct on how to create healthy desserts on March 11, both of which start at 5:30 p.m. The third demonstration will cover sushi rolling at 12:30 p.m. March 28. All instructions will take place in the Human Environmental Sciences Building kitchen, Room 111A. Reservations can be made by emailing

The UCO Student Association of Nutrition and Dietetics will present “Ask a Dietetics Student” booth in the Nigh University Center near the food court from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 11 and March 26. Students in Central’s nutrition, dietetics and food management programs will answer questions about nutritious meals and living a healthy lifestyle, while providing free nutrition resources and educational materials.

“Broncho Bites” will provide the Central community the opportunity to sample fresh fruits and vegetables provided by local grocery stores and markets from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 24 and March 25 near the clock at Broncho Lake.

National Nutrition Month at Central is sponsored by UCO Healthy Campus in partnership with Mercy Clinic at UCO, the Wellness Center, UCO Peer Health Leaders, Community/Public Health Club and the Student Association of Nutrition and Dietetics.
