Edmond makes 100 best places to live list

EDMOND — Edmond is No. 73 on CNN Money Magazine’s 2012 top 100 list of best places to live.

Carmel, Ind., population 80,100, topped the list. Other Oklahoma cities included were Broken Arrow (No. 69), Moore (No. 77) and Norman (No. 92).

“Also known for fabulous schools and fantastically low property taxes, Edmond is a prime choice for many families who work 20 minutes down the road in Oklahoma City,” the magazine wrote about Edmond. “While the downtown district is small, it’s peppered with many fine examples of public art.”

The magazine also touted Edmond as a “golf mecca.” More than 10 golf courses are located in the area, including Oak Tree National. The magazine also noted Edmond’s growing number of rugby clubs and proximity to Arcadia Lake.

City leaders also tout Edmond’s population growth — the 2011 estimate was 83,019 — two four-year universities, a cost of living well below the national average, a low crime rate and its rich heritage of culture and entertainment. The city is also home to two hospitals; a third is under construction.

Top earning towns on the 2012 top 25 list were No. 1 Bethesda, Md., with a  2011 median family income of $814,606, No. 2 Greenwich, Conn. ($167,502), No. 3 Palo Alto, Calif. ($163,661), No. 4 Newport Beach, Calif. ($156,928) and No. 5 Lower Merion, Pa. ($153,309). The magazine listed Edmond’s median family income at $87,968.

With a 2011 median home sale price of $92,000, Enid was No. 8 on the magazine’s 2012 top 25 most affordable homes list. Spring, Texas, was No. 1 ($98,214), North Port, Fla., was No. 2 ($86,000), Missouri City, Texas, was No. 3 ($145,690), Cedar Rapids, Iowa, was No. 4 ($113,000) and Bellevue, Neb., was No. 5 ($124,000). CNN Money Magazine put Edmond’s median home sale price at $189,000.

With a median commute time of 12.4 minutes, Enid was No. 14 on the 2012 top 25 shortest commute list. With a commute of 11.2 minutes, Manhattan, Kan., topped the list. Grand Forks, N.D., was No. 2 (11.4 minutes), Harrisonburg, Va., was No. 3 (11.8 minutes). Dubuque, Iowa, and Bismarck, N.D., tied for No. 4 (11.9 minutes). Edmond’s commute time was listed at 20.6 minutes.

Information about criteria the magazine used for compiling the lists is available at money.cnn.com. In 2011, Edmond was named the No. 1 perfect suburb by CNBC.com. In 2010, it was named a Best Town for Families by Family Circle.
