EDMOND —
New tentative details of the proposed indoor sports complex at Interstate 35 and Covell Road emerged from a panel reviewing the plans.
During Tuesday’s meeting, members of the Capital Projects and Financing Task Force reviewed a term sheet regarding the sports complex development agreement between the city, the Edmond Public Works Authority and developer Summit Sports.
They reviewed a similar agreement related to the proposed I-35/Covell hotel and conference center. Details set out in the related term sheets delivered Tuesday are in draft form and subject to change, said City Attorney Steve Murdock.
Plans call for the complex being considered by the task force to be located on 19.35 acres at the northeast corner of I-35 and Covell, according to the sports complex development agreement. Earlier this month, the city broke ground for a new Edmond softball complex being built at Route 66 Park, a quarter mile east of Post Road and State Highway 66.
Assistant City Manager Steve Commons said the city intends to spend $2 million to buy the land. The developer would pay all construction costs for the indoor sports complex, which would be privately owned and operated.
Current thinking calls for development and construction of a roughly 170,000-square-foot indoor family-centered athletic complex, according to the draft of the agreement. Features would include a grill, cafe, a restaurant and/or deli, a fitness and training facility and an athletic equipment retailer.
Plans call for the facility to be used for competitive and recreational athletic tournaments, athletic camps and academies and other relevant customary uses.
Under the current agreement, the developer will prepare design and construction documents for the indoor sports complex in a form suitable for bidding within 12 months of the execution of the development agreement. The city may approve, disapprove or impose further requirements.
The task force is scheduled to meet next on Oct. 16 at the Planning and Public Works Building, 10 S. Littler.

Clean-up continues for Edmond tornado victims
Mid-June is the approximate time that work is expected to be completed in Edmond for replacing nine transmission structures lost in Sunday’s tornado, said Brian Alford, OG&E spokesperson. Repairs could take longer, depending on weather conditions, he added.
Work in Edmond focuses on the Forest Oaks and Thornbrooke additions, both along Bryant Avenue. Twelve homes were damaged in the city by the storm that also dropped hail on northwest Edmond. Major damage impacted three of the homes while the other nine homes had minor damage, said Matt Stillwell, director of the city’s emergency communications and management.
Contract crews from out-of-state are helping OG&E in their restoration effort throughout central and southern Oklahoma, Alford said. -
