EDMOND —
Citizens Caring for Children, a nonprofit organization providing clothing, shoes, books, school supplies, mentors and other necessities to foster children, is hosting its annual Back to School event for children in foster care ages pre-K through 12th grade.
Back to School takes place at the CCC Resource Center located at 730 W. Wilshire Creek Blvd., Suite 112 in Oklahoma City. The event is open the following dates and times. No appointment is necessary.
• 9 a.m.-noon and 1-5 p.m., Saturday, July 21
• 9 a.m.-noon and 1-5 p.m., Saturday, July 28
• 9 a.m.-noon and 1-5 p.m., Monday–Friday, July 23-Aug. 17
Children are matched with a personal shopper who will help them find a new outfit, shoes, socks and underwear for their first day of school. Uniforms are also available. Backpacks and school supplies are offered through a partnership with the Junior League. In addition, the children will receive a new backpack and school supplies.
“I like to get my clothes for school and I wanted to thank you for helping me,” said a 12-year-old foster child following last year’s Back to School event.
Children must be 4 years old by Aug. 1 and must be present to shop. In order to participate, foster parents must provide a valid driver's license and placement paperwork indicating the child is in custody of the Department of Human Services.
“We expect to serve more than 800 children at this year’s event,” said Amy Mitchell, executive director of CCC. “We are very grateful for the organizations who have stepped up to help us serve Oklahoma’s foster children. But we are still in need of additional support and volunteers.”
Kona Ice will be at the event the afternoon of July 21 and 28 passing out free snow cone and each child who attends the Back to School event will receive a coupon for a free pizza from Little Caesars.
Volunteers are needed for all shifts. To sign up to volunteer, contact 753-4099, ext. 101, or email general@citizenscaringforchildren.org. Volunteer training is required.
The Inasmuch Foundation, Edmond Women’s Club, the Junior League of Oklahoma City, Kona Ice and Little Caesars Pizza are sponsoring the event. For more information or to make a donation, visit

Clean-up continues for Edmond tornado victims
Mid-June is the approximate time that work is expected to be completed in Edmond for replacing nine transmission structures lost in Sunday’s tornado, said Brian Alford, OG&E spokesperson. Repairs could take longer, depending on weather conditions, he added.

Major damage impacted three of the homes while the other nine homes had minor damage, said Matt Stillwell, director of the city’s emergency communications and management.
Contract crews from out-of-state are helping OG&E in their restoration effort throughout central and southern Oklahoma, Alford said. -
