EDMOND —
Thanks to the generosity of Trusted Choice Independent Insurance Agents of Oklahoma, Top of the World and an anonymous family donor, all tax-deductible donations made to the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma’s Food for Kids program were matched, dollar for dollar, up to $100,000 during August and September. There was an overwhelming response from the community and more than $612,000 was raised, including more than $110,000 raised from News 9’s Ride Against Childhood Hunger, the food bank stated. This will provide food for chronically hungry children in elementary, middle and high school throughout central and western Oklahoma.
One in four children in Oklahoma struggles with hunger every day, according to the Regional Food Bank. Research shows that children living in food-insecure households have more difficulty concentrating in school than children in food-secure households.
Last school year, the following elementary schools participated in the Food for Kids program in Edmond: Angie Debo, Centennial, Charles Haskell, John Ross, Northern Hills, Northern Hills, Orvis Risner, West Field, Washington Irving and Will Rogers. Schools are currently enrolling in the program for the 2012-13 school year. In total, the Regional Food Bank provided more than 1.4 million meals to chronically hungry children through Food for Kids childhood hunger programs: the Backpack Program, Kids Cafe, Summer Feeding and School Pantries.
• Through the Backpack Program, children receive a backpack full of kid-friendly, non-perishable and nutritious food on Friday to sustain them over weekends and school holidays.
• The School Pantry Program provides chronically hungry middle and high school students, who are identified by school personnel, with food to sustain them after school and over the weekends.
• Kids Cafe, an afterschool and summer program provides food, mentoring, tutoring and a variety of other activities at 19 sites in central and western Oklahoma.
