Special to The Sun

EDMOND — The University of Central Oklahoma School of Music will wrap up its instrumental performance season with three concerts featuring Central students April 29 through May 1 at Mitchell Hall Theater located on the UCO campus.

First, the UCO Symphony Orchestra will perform at 7:30 p.m. April 29 featuring two Central student soloists, violinist Xinye Niu and pianist Yeujiao Jin.

Both Nui and Jin were the spring winners of the Concerto Competition on campus, in which all applied music students, both instrumental and vocal, competed for a soloist spot with the UCO Symphony Orchestra.

The concert’s program includes pieces by Jean Sibelius, Friedrich Chopin, Gioacchino Rossini and Sergie Prokofiev.

The UCO Symphonic Band will perform a variety of traditional band compositions at 7:30 p.m. on the following evening, April 30.

The concert will feature works by John Philip Sousa and Leonard Bernstein, among others.

Graduate student Brittany Richardson will be featured as a guest conductor for the Symphonic Band’s performance of “Shenandoah” and “Fortress” by Frank Tichel.

The UCO Wind Symphony will end the series of music performances with a concert at 7:30 p.m. May 1.

The concert will include work by composers Ron Nelson, Philip Sparke, Darius Milhaud and Paul Osterfield.

The concert will feature Central associate professor of flute and professional performer Emily Butterfield as a soloist.

“The UCO School of Music students have so many wonderful opportunities to practice their craft and add to their professional development,” said Sandra Thompson, interim chair of Central’s school of music.

“Featuring hard working students as soloist and conductors and utilizing our talented faculty members to collaborate with students further underscores the importance of the transformative learning that happens on our campus regularly.”

Tickets for each concert are $8 for adults, and $6 for senior citizens, Central faculty and staff with a valid ID and non-UCO students. Tickets can be purchased by calling the Mitchell Hall Theater Box Office at 974-3375 or visiting Central students receive one free ticket with their student UCO I.D. at the box office.
