Gang, drug issues remain

EDMOND — Recent raids at two apartment complexes were effective, but they are not the end to gang and drug issues in Edmond, police said.

During a two-day stretch last week, Edmond led a multi-agency operation that netted a total of 18 arrests and drugs at the Rolling Green and ChapelRidge apartment complexes. Glynda Chu, spokeswoman for the Edmond Police Department, said no new charges have been filed yet, but additional arrests may be pending.

An investigation into a possible abusive situation involving an infant continues, Chu said. The infant was removed from the home.

Regarding the previous arrests, charges from the Oklahoma County District Attorney’s Office are pending. Complaints against those arrested included possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, outstanding warrants, including fraud by bogus checks and attempting to elude police officers.

“The raids were very effective and with the arrest of 18 people in two days and three others pending and the drugs seized during the raids, and perhaps foremost, taking a baby out of an abusive situation, it is obvious there was a need for the enforcement action that was taken by the Edmond Police Department,” Chu said.

The Police Department has received positive feedback from management at both apartment complexes, residents and neighbors, Chu said. Many people took time to stop as they drove or walked by to thank police for the actions, she said.

The majority of the residents in the apartment complexes are solid law abiding people, and they should not have to be subjected to drug dealing, gangs and intimidation, Chu said.

While the raids were effective, police know this is not an end to the drug and gang problems in Edmond.

“It does show that we are going to fight it every step of the way, and let drug dealers and gang members participating in illegal activity know without a doubt, they are not welcome in Edmond,” Chu said.

Police have said more raids likely would be coming.
