Residents encouraged to enter produce in county fair

EDMOND — Growing your own lush tomatoes, plump squash or dozens of other fruits and vegetables is a feat worthy of a prize. And that’s just the reason residents are encouraged to enter their fruits, vegetables and flowers in the 95th annual Oklahoma County Free Fair, which is ongoing at the State Fair Grounds through Saturday.

Produce entries will be accepted Thursday from noon to 7 p.m. in the Centennial Building and winning entries will take home blue ribbons and prize money.

“We’re encouraging residents to check their gardens and flower beds to see what’s growing,” said Samantha Snyder, Oklahoma County OSU Cooperative Extension Horticulture Educator. “Entering produce, agricultural crops or flowers in the county fair is a good way to bring home blue ribbons and cash premiums along with the knowledge that you’re growing the best.”

The exhibitions will be open for public view Friday from 1-7 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon.

“We have a wide variety of open classes,” Snyder said. “In addition to produce and crops, we also have categories for house plants, flowers and even flower arrangements.”

Onions, peppers, squash, green beans, turnips, melons, pumpkins, potatoes, apples and even watermelons are just a few of the many different fruit and vegetable sections that offer premiums and blue-ribbon competition. Flower arrangements and individual stems and sprays in a wide variety of classes and categories are also offered.

“We’d like to encourage every gardener in Oklahoma County to enter something,” said Snyder. “Our county fair offers fun competition and a way for us to come out and see what our neighbors are growing and producing.”

All produce, flowers or crop entries must be grown by the person entering them. A likely prospect for first place, Snyder said, is an entry with good color and free of blemishes.
