EDMOND — Scott and Tammy Werner say they consider it an honor and privilege to partner with parents in the lives of their children.

“The most important thing in anyone’s life is their kids,” Scott Werner said. “So we take that as a huge privilege, but we also take it as a big responsibility and just appreciate the trust.”

The Werners became owners of My Small Wonders Daycare Center in 2011.

“Prior to that I was the children’s pastor at LifeChurch.tv,” Scott said. “It was just a natural transition. We’re excited to be in business in the private sector here in Edmond.”

The Edmond City Council this week approved 5-0 a rezoning issue for My Small Wonders Daycare Center, located north of Covell Road, east of Kelly Avenue. The council also agreed to a request by developer Derek Turner to amend the Edmond Plan from Single Family Dwelling District Planned Unit Development to Planned Unit Development.

This location is on Village Parkway, a collector street for the Coffee Creek housing addition, said Bob Schiermeyer, city planner. This use is also adjacent to other office-type businesses, he said.

The PUD allows for office use in the event the day care business closed, Schiermeyer said. It also will cover the existing playground on the 1.25 acres of property. Plans are for the 6,802-square-foot addition to increase the existing building to 14,480 square feet and appear as one facility.

Edmond Planning Commission recommended approval in May by a vote of 5-0.

“When the addition to the day care is constructed, this PUD will be complete,” Schiermeyer said.

The Werners are onsite each working hour of their day care along with their director and staff. The center provides a full kitchen for services.

“We buy everything fresh,” Scott said. “That was one of the huge things we changed immediately. Our food costs went from about $500 a week to $1,300 a week because we wanted to offer fresh fruit and vegetables and bread.”

The Werners also added a curriculum team for the entire center to enhance the work of the day care’s teaching staff.

“Our baby waiting list goes until our new building will be here in April of next year,” Scott said.
