Edmond firefighters turned into Santa’s helpers Friday as they delivered Christmas gifts from generous area residents to children battling cancer.
The firefighters delivered carts filled with presents to the oncology floor at OU Medical Center’s Children’s Hospital. Edmond Fire Department driver Luke Gregory said the idea came from a dispatcher who also works at the hospital. He put a challenge to city employees and the Fire Department took it from there, Gregory said. The local firefighter union and others donated the gifts for girls and boys of different ages.
“I’m just glad to be a small part of it, making their day a little brighter,” Gregory said. “These are some really sick kids who are going through a lot right now. If we can help put a smile on their face that’s awesome.”
Edmond resident Lindsie Warren, a child life specialist at the hospital, said the hospital coordinated the delivery of the presents with the Edmond Fire Department and Ally’s House to get ages of children at the hospital so they could get the appropriate presents.
“When you’re here it means everything,” Warren said of the reaction of the children. “You spend lots of time in your room and it helps pass the time while you’re waiting for different things here at the hospital. It normalizes everything that they’re going through."

Clean-up continues for Edmond tornado victims
Mid-June is the approximate time that work is expected to be completed in Edmond for replacing nine transmission structures lost in Sunday’s tornado, said Brian Alford, OG&E spokesperson. Repairs could take longer, depending on weather conditions, he added.
Work in Edmond focuses on the Forest Oaks and Thornbrooke additions, both along Bryant Avenue. Twelve homes were damaged in the city by the storm that also dropped hail on northwest Edmond. Major damage impacted three of the homes while the other nine homes had minor damage, said Matt Stillwell, director of the city’s emergency communications and management.
Contract crews from out-of-state are helping OG&E in their restoration effort throughout central and southern Oklahoma, Alford said. -

Memorial service for tornado victims set
Gov. Mary Fallin announced that a memorial and prayer service will be at 6 p.m. Sunday at the First Baptist Church in Moore. The service will honor and remember the victims of the May 20 tornado that killed 24 people in Moore and the May 19 tornado that killed two in the Shawnee and Carney area. It is open to the public.

Carpenter Square Theatre presents “Something Intangible,” a comedy-drama based on Walt and Roy Disney in 1940s Hollywood. Bruce Graham’s tale focuses on the period when they are developing a full-length animated film set to classical music. The new play will be performed through June 8 at 800 W. Main in downtown Oklahoma City.
