EDMOND —
Progress continues on constructing the new Broadway Bridge in Logan County. Replacement of the obsolete 73-year-old Broadway Bridge with a modern structure will improve public safety and mobility, said Logan County Commissioner Mark Sharpton of District 1.
“As of right now they are about 30 working days from completing that,” Sharpton said. “You don’t want them moving dirt below 40 degrees. You want it to be above freezing so you can get the right moisture content.”
The new bridge already has a deck on it with heaters set at 60 degrees underneath it. It is possible that the bridge could open in February, but that is up to the contractor.
“I’d rather them do it right than go through with it when the temperature is too low,” Sharpton said.
Construction will involve a new 227-foot structure with large 12-foot lanes and 4.5-foot shoulders, Sharpton said. Bridgeco Contractors Inc. was the low bidder for the $1.12 million project.
Eighty percent of the cost of the Broadway bridge replacement project was approved for federal funding through the Surface Transportation Program. The remaining 20 percent match was through the County Bridge and Road Improvements fund, Sharpton said.
State Rep. Jason Murphey, R-Guthrie, said counties oftentimes get that federal STEP money through the Association of Central Oklahoma Governments or the Association of County Commissioners of Oklahoma.
The bridge should be wide enough for the next 25 years, Sharpton said. The two-lane bridge at Broadway and Camp was demolished in July for being too narrow for oncoming traffic.
“I would like to have four lanes it but that doubles the cost of the bridge,” Sharpton said.
In addition, three miles of new overlay should also improve traffic on Coltrane coming from Waterloo to Seward Road.
“That’s what it’s about, getting those folks who have been ignored out there for years in and out, connecting communities together,” Sharpton said. “A lot of folks don’t want to drive on the interstate.”
Sharpton is waiting to get word from the Oklahoma Department of Transportation regarding more than $600,000 of work on the Charter Oak Bridge spanning Chisel Creek between Santa Fe and Western. It will allow the Charter Oak 2 fire district to better serve properties to its west.

President pledges to aid Moore disaster recovery

Monday’s report of 51 fatalities has been revised downward; counts likely will remain very fluid today. As of Tuesday morning, the death toll is at 24 and nine of those are reported to be children. -
