Fine Arts Institute of Edmond enrolls for art classes

EDMOND — Winter classes begin the week of Jan. 7 for adults and Jan. 14 for children at the Fine Arts Institute of Edmond with a wide selection of art related classes. A nonprofit organization, the institute is at 27 E. Edwards.

Winter is a nice time for people to include art classes in their schedules. Children’s classes include basic drawing and art studio with Gary Lennon, basic painting and pre-teen painting by Linda Cowan, the language of color and foundation drawing by Leslie Lienau, cartooning taught by John Campbell, and art explosion and acrylic painting by Becky Collins.

Saturday art includes: cartooning fun and mommy and me sculpey with Elizabeth Norton, wonderful winter scapes, rain forest animal, clay masks, Valentine pop-up cards, watercolors, self portraits, and fantasy fairy painting by Becki Collins. Lisa Robinson and Susan Scott will combine theatre fun and visual art in A Blizzard of Snowmen and Arty Heart Party. Three Saturday classes will include stories and art: Bedheads & Fairy Dust, Armadillo Rodeo, and Fancy Hats & Tea.

The littlest artists, 3–6 years, have visual art classes which include art adventures with Karlene McCarty, hands in clay with Linda Cowan, and magical theatre journeys with Susan Scott.

A special curriculum has been designed for home schooled children in grades second through eighth. Basic art for home schooled students and 3-dimensional art will be taught by Shannon Price. Leslie Lienau will teach foundation drawing and Elizabeth Norton will offer Cartooning fun. A new home school class, music appreciation, is taught by Shirley Kendrick who will help children discover the enjoyment of music.

During the winter, children who join the FAI Kids Sculpey Club will make a snow family, panda, giraffe, Valentine bear, monkey, bird in a nest, rabbit family, flower pot with flowers, hippo, sheep, and frog. Pre-teen sculpture will be taught by Linda Cowan.

Theater magic classes with Susan Scott are offered for kindergarten through fifth-graders. Act Fast and advanced acting workshop will help young actors hone their fundamental acting skills through comedy impro, monologues and scene work.

A theater audition workshop will be presented by Peggy Hoshall who will be directing the FAI production of “The Miracle Worker” with auditions Jan. 26.

Stephanie Carel will guide her jewel students in bird bling, valentine jewelry for mom, heart boxes, pot o’ gold, lucky charms, and pearls for mom.

Language arts will be represented by A Lifetime Gift: Spanish, a class for first- through fourth-graders taught by Claudia Cabas. The objective of this class is for children to understand basic and simple Spanish vocabulary and conversation as well as reading and writing.

Adults can improve their artistic skills with the following classes: drawing, painting, watercolor, still life painting, jewelry making, pottery, and stained and fused glass. Beginning and continuing students mingle and learn together in adult classes. Adult art teachers include Julie Miller, Gary Lennon, Stephanie Carel, Dianne Adams McMahon, Leslie Lienau, Linda Cowan and Carol Wilson.

Art therapist, Mary Lou Moad, will continue “The Artist’s Way” helping adults discover and recover their creative selves. This class is perfect for experienced artists and non-artists or for anyone who wants their future to be more colorful, more creative and more on track.

The Childbloom Guitar Program is housed at the Institute. This unique music program for 5 to 12 year olds teaches classical guitar. Also Julie Atyia teaches Kindermusik for preschoolers at FAI.

The Fine Arts Institute is Edmond’s nonprofit arts organization offering educational enrichment in the visual and performing arts for adults and children. A professional faculty teaches art related classes in a friendly and welcoming atmosphere.
