EDMOND — The Edmond Sun received recognition this weekend during the Oklahoma Press Association’s Better Newspaper Contest for 2007.
The Sun placed in nine out of 12 categories in the annual contest, competing in Division 2 for daily newspapers with a circulation between 4,500 and 8,999.
The newspaper earned third place overall honors in its division behind Claremore Daily Progress and Sequoyah Award winner The Duncan Banner.
Honors for 2007 entries included: First place in advertising and photography; second place in sports writing and layout and design; third place in community leadership and fourth place in news content, personal columns, news writing and feature writing.
The judge in the photography category had this to say about The Sun’s work in 2007: “You guys get it! Your entry is head and feet above everyone else … . Your pictures of the year package won you this title, but it was all well done.”
In other categories, judges described The Sun’s work as exceptional storytelling that show initiative and imagination. In particular, a Fourth of July package on the American dream was cited as outstanding for having “real people telling real stories.”
The Sun’s sports coverage was described as having a good breadth of coverage and a nice page design.
The contest was judged this year by members of the Washington Newspaper Publishers Association.
