Official warns parents about safety after power box explodes
An underground electric transformer exploded Sunday night, leaving about 1,000 people without power for more than two hours.
Monday afternoon, an Edmond Electric spokesman issued this safety warning: Don’t allow children to play on or near the boxes. There are about 8,500 such transformer boxes across Edmond.
“Fortunately no one was injured and we’re thankful for that,” said Dean Sherrick, distribution superintendent for Edmond Electric.
Sherrick said the City of Edmond is shipping this piece of equipment off to a contracted transformer repair company to investigate what happened. He said it’s unusual for a transformer box to explode and shoot flames, but that any equipment housing high-voltage wires is considered dangerous to play around.
The box was in the front yard of a home in the Westborough addition off Danforth and Kelly. These particular transformers have 7,200-volt wires inside them, Sherrick said.
The failure of this box also caused a breaker to open at the Ketch Acres substation on Danforth, which extended the power outage, he said. By 7:30 p.m. most homes had power restored.
