4 Edmond schools get perfect API scores

Patty Miller

EDMOND — Four Edmond schools achieved perfect scores on the Academic Performance Index given last year.

Chisholm, Clegern, Cross Timbers and Russell Dougherty elementary schools all achieved perfect scores of 1500, bringing the district’s score to 1449, 32 points higher than the previous year.

Monday night, Linda DeSpain, associate superintendent for curriculum services, told Edmond school board members this is the second year in a row Clegern has earned a 1500.

“Everyone in our team is to be commended,” DeSpain said.

The API is a numeric score created by the Oklahoma State Department of Education to indicate school performance and meet the accountability standards and requirements of the federal No Child Left Behind Act of 2001.

API scores in high schools are based on seven indicators grouped into three components: Oklahoma School Testing Program, school completion (dropout, graduation and attendance rates) and academic excellence (ACT performance, advanced placement and college remediation).

Elementary and middle schools’ API components are based on testing, including student performance in reading and math, and attendance rates.

Two district schools made below 1400, DeSpain said. Central Middle School’s score of 1387 reflected a 62-point gain from the previous year, and Orvis Risner scored a 1367.

The state goal for math is 932 and for reading is 914. DeSpain said all the schools, as well as the district as a whole, are above state goals.

DeSpain said the outstanding student achievement reflected in the reports provides reason to celebrate and is a direct result of the efforts of the dedicated staff members who work to ensure that each child receives a quality education regardless of the school that they attend within our school district.

Although other school districts’ scores have not been released at this time, Board of Education President George Cohlmia said he expects the school district will be ranked at the top or near it when compared to other schools in the state. In the 6A district, Edmond scores were ranked the highest in the past.
