Langston, OHP plan for large crowds Saturday
Langston — LANGSTON — With homecoming activities happening at both Langston University and Oklahoma State University on Saturday, officials with the LU Police Department and the Oklahoma Highway Patrol announced Wednesday there will be a strong law enforcement presence this weekend to help ensure public safety on the college campus and along State Highway 33.
“We want everyone to come and have a great time, but we are also encouraging people not to drink and drive on their way here,” said OHP Trooper Antonio Porter, who serves as a law enforcement liaison with the Oklahoma Highway Safety Office. “We also want to make sure that drivers are buckled up. We are partnering here with Langston University to make sure we provide a safe environment for the campus during the festivities that is going on.”
Porter said having an increased law enforcement presence also is designed to remind drivers to act responsibly.
“Our (law enforcement) presence is always a deterrent,” Porter said. “We always want to do our best to maintain a safe environment for everyone.”
Michael Randall, a Langston campus police officer, said the university is expecting anywhere from 10,000 to 20,000 people to attend the homecoming activities, which include a comedy show, dance, a homecoming step show and homecoming parade on Saturday starting at 10 a.m. in downtown Langston.
LU plays Texas College at 2 p.m. at Anderson Stadium.
As part of the homecoming celebration, public safety officials and law enforcement officers will focus on highway safety issues.
Porter said law enforcement officials will sponsor a booth Saturday from 8 a.m. through the end of the football game. There also will be representatives with Mothers Against Drunk Driving on hand.
As part of the festivities, officials also will give away prizes including T-shirts, electronics, restaurant gift cards, car maintenance items and other materials, along with highway safety-themed brochures and children’s activity books.
“We expect a lot of people to visit our campus during homecoming week,” Randall said. “This is a big celebration, and we want to make highway safety an important part of it.”
Randall said all of the entrances to the LU campus will be open Saturday, but for safety reasons all visitors will be required to present a valid driver’s license or state-issued identification card.
Porter said due to Oklahoma State University’s 8:15 p.m. game with the University of Missouri, he is encouraging drivers to allow plenty of time to arrive in Stillwater. OSU’s homecoming parade begins at 2 p.m.
“People need to plan ahead of time and allow enough time for travel,” Porter said. “We (OHP) will be patrolling along State Highway 33 before and after the games to make sure everyone is safe.”
