Deer Creek runners donate hair

EDMOND — Deer Creek cross country runners Hillarie Kessler and Kristiani Miller decided three years ago to grow out their hair and donate it to an organization that makes wigs for women and girls battling cancer.

In advance of last weekend’s class 4A state championship meet, they visited Elle Salon at 150th Street and Western, where owner Lori Hickman, who had heard of the girls’ plan through a mutual friend, donated the haircuts.

Kessler and Miller donated their hair in honor of teammate Paige Patrick, who battled non-Hodgkin lymphoma in the fifth grade and is currently in remission, and Joni Brown, a former school teacher who is currently battling recurrent bone cancer.

The girls said they feel it is such a small effort on their part that can tremendously effect some child or adult who loses their hair with chemotherapy.
