EDMOND — A Dickens of A Christmas set to kick off Dec. 3
Downtown Edmond once again returns to a simpler time of life, a more traditional Christmas as merchants turn back the hands of time in their Victorian attire and present “A Dickens of A Christmas” and “Dickens Weekend” Dec. 3-6. Festivities begin at 5 p.m. Dec. 3 at the Festival Market Place Plaza, with special music from the 145th Army Jazz Trio, the Dickens Carolers and Santa. Karen Moore Studio will offer Christmas picture packets for $12. The Mayor’s Tree Lighting ceremony and essay winners presentation will begin at 6 p.m.
Following the Mayor’s Tree Lighting, Edmond Electric Parade of Lights, co-sponsored by The Downtown Edmond Business Association will step-off from UCO area at 6:45 p.m. traveling east on First Street to Broadway, Broadway north to Campbell, Campbell to University then south on University. Downtown-area streets will be closed for the parade beginning at 5 p.m. that evening. Streets that will be closed for the parade route are University from Campbell to Second Street, First Street east to Broadway, Broadway west to Campbell, Campbell south to University and Broadway will be closed at Second Street.

Resident councils
in long-term care
Across the country, residents of nursing homes and other long-term care facilities honored the individual rights of residents by celebrating National Residents’ Rights Week during the month of October. The week highlighted the importance of listening to the residents who live in LTC facilities with the theme “Hear Our Voice.” The 1987 Nursing Home Reform Act guarantees residents a number of important rights to enhance their nursing home experience and improve facility-wide services and conditions. Key among these rights is the right to form and hold regular private meetings of an organized group called a Resident Council. The Resident Council is a vehicle to bring about positive changes for all residents in the facility.
As advocates for residents, the Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program of Areawide Aging Agency is available to assist resident council members residing in nursing homes and assisted living buildings in Canadian, Cleveland, Logan and Oklahoma counties in exercising this important right of self-advocacy and empowerment of the individual resident.
