Low voter turnout doesn’t stop bond passage
EDMOND — Eligible voters for the Edmond School District’s 2009 bond issue in Logan and Oklahoma counties number 83,565 residents, said Election Board officials in Oklahoma and Logan counties.
Tuesday, 3,237 of those voters turned out for the Edmond School District’s $36.12 million bond issue, passing it with 71.28 percent of the voters casting a “yes” vote, according to numbers released by the Oklahoma County Election Board.
Although voter numbers were somewhat larger than those in 2008, the total came to 3.8 percent of eligible voters going to the polls.
On Dec. 9, 2008, turnout was under 2,500 with voters approving a $36.28 million school bond issue. The passage marked 50 consecutive years of approved bond packages, Edmond Superintendent David Goin said.
“In order for the 2009 bond issue to pass it had to have a 60 percent majority of the votes cast,” Goin said.
With about seven out of 10 voters casting a “yes” vote, the propositions easily exceeded that threshold.
Doug Sanderson, Oklahoma County Election Board secretary, said 2,098 (71.38 percent) of the voters cast a “yes” vote for Proposition 1, and 841 voters (28.62 percent) voted “no.”
Proposition 2 garnered about the same numbers, with 2,088 (71.02 percent) “yes” votes and 852 “no” votes.
In Oklahoma County, 79,765 residents were eligible to vote and 3,176 or 3.9 percent turned out, Sanderson said.
Logan County showed a lower voter turnout. With 3,800 registered to vote in the school district, 61 or 1.6 percent actually went to the polls to cast their vote, said Judy Farris, a Logan County Election Board official.
