Owasso native crowned Miss UCO 2010
EDMOND — Julie Christian, a junior political science major from Owasso, will advance to the Miss Oklahoma pageant after being crowned Miss University of Central Oklahoma 2010 on Nov. 14 at the university’s annual scholarship pageant.
Christian’s new title qualifies her for the opportunity to represent Central at next year’s Miss Oklahoma pageant held in June in Tulsa, a preliminary for the Miss America pageant.
As Miss UCO, Christian will serve as a role model within the community while promoting her chosen platform, which involves serving as an advocate for Oklahomans Against Trafficking Humans (O.A.T.H.), a nonprofit organization dedicated to increasing awareness of human trafficking, identifying victims and working collaboratively to provide comprehensive services to victims in Oklahoma.
“Many people in our state are unaware Oklahoma ranks number seven in the nation for sex trafficking, and as Miss UCO, I’ve been given an opportunity to really broadcast this issue. I plan on going to law school for Human Rights Law, so my career and heart is and will be devoted to doing what I can in whatever capacity I’m filling to bring this issue to light,” Christian said.
“Because the Miss America system empowers young women, I knew it was time for this crime to be represented at the Miss Oklahoma pageant.”
Christian added this is her fourth pageant to compete in, and for her it has been the most enjoyable due in part to the young women she was able to share the stage with.
“Pageants are an enjoyable experience as long as you go into the competition with the mindset you will have fun no matter what the outcome. You sell yourself short if you go in too serious.”
In addition to the trophy, crown and title, Christian received an $1,800 Central tuition waiver scholarship and a $500 cash scholarship as well as a wardrobe allowance, necklace from Field Jewelry and personal training sessions with 180º Personal Training.
First runner-up Heidi Heineman, a sophomore from Tulsa, received a $1,200 Central tuition waiver scholarship and a $250 cash scholarship.
Amanda Barfield, a senior from Broken Arrow, was named second runner-up and received a $1,200 Central tuition waiver and a $200 cash scholarship.
Third runner-up was Natasha Irons, a junior from Broken Arrow, who received a $1,200 Central tuition waiver and a $150 cash scholarship.
Stephanie Villanella, a sophomore from Skiatook, was named fourth runner-up and received a $1,200 Central tuition waiver scholarship and a $100 cash scholarship.
The Miss Congeniality Award went to Irons, Heineman was awarded the Talent Winner, the Physical Fitness in a Swimsuit Award went to Christian and the People’s Choice winner was Villanella.
Lindsey Allen, a freshman from Lawton, received the Director’s Award, which includes a $100 cash scholarship.
All winners received a trophy along with their awards.
