City of Edmond creates fund for senior meals

Mayor hopes fund will allow restoration of meals by Nov. 30

EDMOND — A special fund has been created so donations of money can be given to offset the Areawide Aging Agency’s abandonment of Edmond’s senior nutrition program. Mayor Patrice Douglas said she hopes this fund will allow the meals to be restored by Nov. 30.

“As mayor I found that I just wasn’t willing to let the program stay closed for a very long time,” Douglas said.

An order by the Areawide Aging Agency cut Edmond’s senior nutrition program by $53,000, enough to end the program earlier this month. A state budget cut of $173,000 diminished the Oklahoma County Senior Nutrition Program. Of the 27 senior nutrition sites in the county, Douglas said Edmond is absorbing one-third of the cost cuts.

Edmond’s state lawmakers continue to push the Areawide Aging Agency to restore Edmond’s fair share of the program, she said. State Rep. Marian Cooksey, R-Edmond, is working with local churches to provide support for the program.

“The city has been attempting to set meetings and has not yet received a call back from Areawide Aging Agency, trying to see if there’s some way we can work with them,” Douglas said. “We’re still willing to partner in any way we can to bring these funds back.”

The Senior Center was one of the most visited sites in the four-county district by serving 60-70 warm meals a day, sometimes seniors’ only meal for the day, Douglas said. County health department regulations prohibit the donations of meals themselves to the program. But warm nutritious meals can be provided by the fund for about $3 a piece, Douglas said.

“We’re going to have to rally some community support for it and get it back up and running,” she said.

An average of 85 seniors a day ate the free meals at the Edmond Senior Center in 2008. This number would sometimes swell to 115 before the Areawide Aging Agency capped the site to feed only 65 people daily, said Gail Deaton, executive director of the Edmond Senior Center.

TO MAKE A DONATION to Edmond’s Senior Nutrition program, write a check to the City of Edmond noting the senior nutrition program on the check. Mail the check to the City of Edmond, 24 E. First St., Edmond, OK, 73083-2870.
