Police ready for ‘Shop With A Cop’

EDMOND — Some Edmond children may have a negative impression of police officers based on what they have seen or heard.

An annual holiday program is designed to help bring Christmas to children who may not otherwise receive the joy of receiving a gift, and to help them see a different side of police officers.

Shop With A Cop is sponsored by the Edmond Fraternal Order of Police and is designed to create a positive interaction between police officers and families, said Officer Jon Cramer. Cramer has been involved with the program for about 15 years.

The need for the program is as important as it has ever been, Cramer said. “It is always important to have positive interaction with the citizens and this program gives us the chance,” he said.

“The children often buy for friends and family and occasionally have to be reminded to get themselves something,” Cramer said. “Many children go from having a very dim Christmas to one of being able to give gifts to loves ones.”

Each year, the HOPE Center supplies the Edmond Fraternal Order of Police with names of children, Cramer said. On a Sunday morning — Dec. 13 this year — police officers, the children and their families meet at the Walmart at 15th Street and I-35.

A child is paired with an officer and the two go shopping. The amount of money spent per child depends on donations and the number of children. Walmart provides breakfast for the officers, parents and children.

Police spokeswoman Glynda Chu said the officers give freely of their time each year to help make Shop With A Cop a success.

“They have such a great time seeing the smiles light up the children’s faces, and knowing that because of the generosity of the Edmond community these children will have something special for Christmas this year,” Chu said.

Chu said it may be the only new toy or new clothes they receive, and the joy of having something new and not used or handed down, something just for them, and the happiness it brings is special. It also helps the officers bond with Edmond youth.

Financial donations may be mailed in or dropped off at the Edmond Police Department, 23 E. First St. Mailed donations should be sent to Edmond Shop With A Cop, P.O. Box 5441, Edmond, OK 73083.
