EDMOND — Holiday heroes fill wish lists for foster children

Foster children in Oklahoma County won’t be with their families this December but Holiday Heroes will make their holidays brighter.

The Oklahoma Department of Human Services is collecting gifts for 3,600 foster children in Oklahoma County and 1,500 foster children in Tulsa County who are victims of abuse and neglect and have been placed in foster homes.

OKDHS collects wish lists from foster children, allowing sponsors to buy exactly what a child has asked for at Christmas. Individuals or groups who want to sponsor a child’s wish list, donate gifts or contribute financially may call Natalie Biddinger at 767-2988 or natalie.biddinger@okdhs.org or visit www.okdhs.org/programsandservices/vol and select on “Holiday Hero.”

Donors will be given wish lists until every child is sponsored. Gifts need to be delivered to the Holiday Hero warehouse by Dec 16.

State Capitol Christmas Tree lighting set for Tuesday

Gov. Brad Henry and first lady Kim Henry will be joined by schoolchildren from across the state on Tuesday for the annual lighting of the State Capitol Christmas tree. The Henrys will light the tree at about 6 p.m. on the south steps of the Capitol.

“This tradition at the State Capitol is a fun and joyous way to celebrate the holiday season,” Henry said. “Kim and I always love the opportunity for Oklahoma families to join together during this special time of year.”

For the first time, the 30-foot-tall artificial evergreen will boast about 2,000 energy-conserving LED lights. Such lights provide an energy savings of 80-90 percent over incandescent lamps and last 100,000 hours.

One hundred evergreens throughout the State Capitol Park also will be lighted during the festivities. All the trees were donated by the Weyerhauser Company Foundation.

As part of the celebration, more than 1,000 children that afternoon will decorate 42 small Christmas trees located throughout the Capitol. The students, ranging in age from preschool to eighth grade, represent schools in Chickasha, Choctaw-Nicoma Park, Edmond, Flower Mound, Maple, Midwest City-Del City, Millwood, Moore, Oklahoma City, Piedmont, Putnam City, Shawnee, Silo and Yukon. A Girl Scout troop and a Cub Scout troop also are participating in the fun.
