City preps for downtown tradition

EDMOND — Christmas cheer will greet families and parade attendees in downtown Edmond Thursday in celebration of the Mayor’s Tree Lighting and Essay Contest for school children.

“We’re very excited about this and it will be followed by the Edmond Electric Parade of Lights,” Mayor Patrice Douglas said of the event.

Downtown Edmond Business Association merchants will usher in the spirit of Christmas at the Festival Market Place beginning at 5 p.m. DEBA will sponsor festive music from the Dickens Carolers.

Those who arrive early can have their photos made with Santa, Douglas said. Karen Moore Studio will offer Christmas picture packets for $12. The Mayor’s Tree Lighting ceremony and essay winners presentation will begin at 6 p.m.

“The downtown merchants feel the 2009 edition of A Dickens Weekend is the best,” said Leah Kessler, DEBA manager. “With the Mayor’s Tree Lighting, Edmond Electric Parade of Lights and downtown Edmond’s version of more traditional Christmas, it will give our visitors a wonderful feeling of a time remembered.”

Edmond Electric’s Parade of Lights in downtown Edmond will begin at the University of Central Oklahoma campus at 6:45 p.m. DEBA is cosponsoring the event.

Streets will close at 5 p.m. and reopen after the parade at about 8 p.m.

“I get the privilege of riding in the trolley with all the winners of the Mayor’s Essay Contest,” Douglas said.

Douglas spirited the return of a Christmas parade after several Edmond families shared their fond memories of the event that the city once sponsored. Downtown merchants will stay open during the event for folks to shop after the parade ends, Douglas said.

DEBA presents “A Dickens of A Christmas” and “Dickens Weekend” Dec. 3-6. Merchants will be dressed in Victorian attire. Holiday shoppers will hear the voices of Christmas carolers on Saturday.

The downtown merchants will collect children’s toys, gloves, hats and scarves for the HOPE Center. Collection boxes will be in most of the downtown merchant’s stores from Dec. 3-11. Dec. 7-24, downtown Edmond stores will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and on Sunday 1-5 p.m.
