Dickens Weekend begins in downtown Edmond as carolers fill the stores and streets to entertain holiday shoppers. The Dickens horse-drawn Christmas trolley will provide visitors a ride through the downtown area on Saturday only. The wonderful smells of hot cider, roasted nuts and more than 50,000 Christmas lights will greet visitors to downtown Edmond this weekend.

The Fine Arts Institute is having a holiday open house from 2-4 p.m. at 27 E. Edwards. Ten members of the Fine Arts Institute faculty will have their art on exhibit and for sale during the month of December. A variety of media and diverse style of two- and three-dimensional art is available. Exhibiting art are Stephanie Carel, Becki Collins, Gary Lennon, Leslie Lienau, Mary Lou Moad, Beth Olson, Shannon Price, Lisa Robinson and Bert Seabourn. For the past five years, the Fine Arts Institute has commissioned Andy Boatman of Blue Sage Studios to design and create a commemorative glass ornament for holiday decorating and giving. Ice skate at the downtown Oklahoma City Devon Ice Rink from noon to 10 p.m. daily through Jan. 3 at the Civic Center, 201 N. Walker. The cost to skate for a two-hour session is $8, which includes skate rental. Skating is $5 for those who supply their own skates.

Chesapeake Snow Tubing continues at the AT&T; Bricktown Ballpark, featuring the nation’s largest manmade snow tubing slope. The ballpark is a holiday stop on the free Oklahoma Spirit Trolley route. The event is open weekends through Dec. 13 and seven days a week from Dec. 18 to Jan. 3. Hours vary. Session size is limited. Admission is $10 for each 90-minute session. Free adventure cruises are offered on the Bricktown Water Taxis during Wimgo Holidays on the Canal. Ride free from 6-9:30 p.m. every Thursday through Sunday through Dec. 27 (closed Christmas). Board the boats across from the ballpark.

Stockyard City’s Cowboy Christmas Parade starts at 10 a.m. at the intersection of Agnew and Exchange avenues in Oklahoma City. The parade features rodeo cowboys and rodeo royalty, Native American dancers, tribal princesses, antique cars and tractors, military personnel, government officials, 100 longhorn steers and more. After the parade, children are invited to visit Cowboy Santa at the Rodeo Opry to take pictues and get a toy. Area merchants will take part in the festivities by having an annual window decorating contest.

“Clue the Musical” will be presented by the Family Theatre Group at 7 p.m. today and 2 p.m. Sunday at the Family Theatre Warehouse, 907 W. Britton Road. The audience participates in the game with a different killer every night. Bring the whole family for a night of fun and mayhem. Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for children. Whodunit: The Science of Solving Crimes was unveiled Friday at the Science Museum Oklahoma in Oklahoma City. The science museum partners with crime-fighting agencies to offer an immersive experience that takes visitors through all aspects of a criminal investigation. From the crime scene to the crime lab, this exhibit encourages visitors to collect evidence, synthesize lab results and utilize deductive reasoning to determine Whodunit.

“Christmas Croonin’,” an annual holiday music revue, will be presented by the University of Central Oklahoma music theatre students at 8 p.m. today and Dec. 10-12 at the UCO Jazz Lab, Fifth Street and Littler Avenue. The show depicts a classic yuletide celebration, including a living room with a roaring fire, a decorated tree and partygoers who frequently burst into the best-loved songs of the season. In all, 22 students will sing more than 22 Christmas songs from the stage, the house and the balcony. Early reservations are recommended. “My Three Angels,” a Sam and Bella Spewack comedy, will be presented by the Oklahoma City Theatre Company in the Freede Theatre at the Civic Center Music Hall. “My Three Angels” will be presented three consecutive weekends through Dec. 20. Performances are at 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and at 2 p.m. Dec. 20. Tickets are $16 for adults, $12 for seniors and students. Group rates also are available. “A Territorial Christmas Carol,” based on the novel by Charles Dickens, will be performed through Dec. 23 at the Pollard Theatre in downtown Guthrie. Adapted by Oklahoma playwright Stephen P. Scott, this version of Dickens’ classic tale of redemption and brotherly love is set in the days of the Oklahoma Land Run. The Pollard’s all-time bestseller continues to play to sold-out houses into its 22nd year. Be sure to buy your tickets early. Call the box office at 282-2800.

“A Tuna Christmas” will play weekends through Dec. 13 at The CitySpace Theatre in the Civic Center Music Hall. In this sequel to “Greater Tuna,” the third-smallest town in Texas is celebrating Christmas. Two radio station news personalities report on the town’s festivities, including the annual lawn display contest. Two quick-changing comedians play a host of zany characters. Horseshoes & Holly, a series of three open houses at the Museum Store of the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum, begins today and continues on Dec. 13 and Dec. 20. Shopping, free gift wrapping, a free gift with purchase, and light refreshments will be available from 11 a.m to 5 p.m. Under new store manager Laney Carey, the store is offering several new product lines, including expanded fashion accessory, art work, gift and houseware selections. Purchases in The Museum Store directly help the museum fulfill its mission to preserve and interpret the evolving history and cultures of the American West.

Myriad Botanical Gardens will offer a holiday paradise with thousands of twinkling lights during the OG&E; Garden of Lights. The Crystal Bridge will open free from 6-9 p.m. every Sunday through Dec. 27 for special twilight viewings, courtesy of OG&E.;

Oklahoma River Holiday Cruises will be offered for free every Sunday from 1-6 p.m. through Dec. 27. Guests can enjoy the holiday lights, hot cocoa and holiday music as they take in the downtown Oklahoma City skyline from an open-air deck or the heated cabin. Introductory cruises are free to all ages. Passengers can board at Regatta Park, 701 S. Lincoln Blvd. For an even more exciting adventure, take an Oklahoma Spirit Trolley for free to the boarding area.

Canterbury Choral Society kicks off the Christmas season with its Canterbury Christmas concert featuring internationally recognized Oklahoma native Kyle Dillingham at the Civic Center, 201 N. Walker Ave. The annual tradition also will feature Oklahoma City University organ professor Elizabeth Harrison, the Chancel Bell Choir for the First Presbyterian Church in Edmond, the Blackwelder Brass Chamber Music Ensemble, the Canterbury Choral Society Adult Chorus, and the Canterbury Youth Choruses and Young Men’s Chorus. In addition, the choral society will have its second annual gingerbread house competition, an audience sing-a-long and a reception following the concert. DEC. 12-13

The Living Christmas Tree will be presented by the First Baptist Church of Edmond at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday and 7 p.m. Sunday. Come hear the sounds of more than 100 voices and a 35-piece orchestra complete with a 30-foot tree. Doors open one hour prior to each performance. The event is free and open to the community.

A Christmas Carol Sing will be presented at 6 p.m. in the sanctuary of Crossings Community Church, 14600 N. Portland Ave. Families will join in singing carols from the “Twelve Days of Christmas” to the “Hallelujah Chorus,” as well as hear special music by the church choir, orchestra and featured musicians. Windsong, Oklahoma’s premier chamber choir, will perform “Magnify,” a concert celebrating Mary, the Mother of Jesus, at 7 p.m. in the St. Joseph Old Cathedral, 307 N.W. Fourth St., Oklahoma City. The free admission is a musical gift from Windsong.

Michael Martin Murphey’s Cowboy Christmas Ball, presented by the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City, will begin at 7 p.m. Murphey will headline an evening of entertainment for the entire family in the museum’s Sam Noble Special Events Center. With its buffet dinner, visit from Santa Claus, and dancing with Murphey’s live performances, the event harkens back to frontier traditions when neighbors gathered to dance, eat and celebrate.
