EDMOND — Han graduates from basic military training

Air Force Airman Joseph K. Han graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills. Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force. He is the son of John Han of Edmond.



Students invited to express environmental concerns through artwork

Children in kindergarten through grade 12 are invited to take part in the 19th annual statewide Trash Poster Contest, organized by the Oklahoma Department of Transportation, Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality, Oklahoma State Department of Education, Oklahoma Highway Safety Office and Keep Oklahoma Beautiful. Deadline for entries is Feb. 1. All winners will receive a certificate. At an awards luncheon in April at ODOT headquarters, each of the 12 state winners will receive a cash award.

In addition, teachers of the 12 state winners will receive vouchers for a two-night stay at a state park and checks for classroom art supplies.

The students will be presented to the Oklahoma House of Representatives at the state Capitol.

New book provides 100-year history of Oklahoma

4-H Program

Oklahoma soon will complete the year-long celebration of the Oklahoma 4-H centennial. To help commemorate this exciting event, a special history book that has been two years in the making is available for order.

“Oklahoma 4-H: Generations of Clover” features nearly 200 pages of exciting history of the Oklahoma 4-H Program and will be available in late spring 2010, said Jessica Stewart, state 4-H marketing coordinator.

“This hardcover book features historical information from all 77 counties in the state and is a compilation of the rich 4-H history from the past 100 years,” Stewart said. “The book also contains mini feature stories about Citizenship Washington Focus, National Congress and Collegiate 4-H, among others.”

The books are $39.99 each, plus $6.50 shipping and handling. A bulk order of five to nine books will be $32.99 per book plus shipping and handling. The cost is only $29.99 plus shipping and handling for bulk orders of 10 or more books. Orders may be shipped to and picked up in person at the State 4-H Office in Stillwater and no shipping and handling charges will apply. Rotary begins Santa visits to Northpark Mall

The metro’s only non-profit mall Santa will once again visit Northpark Mall for the holiday season. This is the 31st year the project has been sponsored by the Rotary Club of Northwest Oklahoma City.

Santa will be available daily from Dec. 10 through Christmas Eve at the mall, Northwest 122nd and May Avenue. There is no charge for a child who wishes to visit with Santa, and parents can have one 4-inch x 6-inch digital picture taken for $5, or other sizes for $10 and $15. The photos will be ready in less than 5 minutes.

Santa hasn’t forgotten his four-legged friends either. Two evenings have been designated as “Pet Nights” for Santa photos: 5-8 p.m. Dec. 9 and Dec. 16.

“This is our club’s major fundraiser for the year,” said Becky Walls, one of the project coordinators. The proceeds go to support Rotary’s projects both locally and internationally.

Rotarians and their families donate their time to staff the booth. The club also hosts special Santa sessions for children with disabilities.

Locally, the club sponsors a Christmas party and a summer fishing and sailing event for the residents of the Baptist Children’s Home. Members also have volunteered to mentor students at Ridgeview Elementary in the Village. The club meets every Tuesday at The McMurrain Center, 10820 N. May Ave. They have about 35 members.
