EDMOND — A 24-year-old admitted drug addict was arrested in the robbery of a city drugstore, police said.
On Nov. 28, Ian Michael Kampschaefer, 24, of Edmond, walked into the Walgreens at 185 E. 33rd Street, approached a register counter and told an employee that he had a gun, according to a police report filed by Officer Jason Roach. The report was released to the media Wednesday.
Police said the suspect again said, “I have a gun.” The suspect told the employee that he was an addict and that he wanted several types of prescription drugs. As he reached under his shirt he said, “This is a robbery.”
The employee gave the suspect several bottles of prescription drugs, police said. The suspect also demanded Alprazolam (Xanax). Before leaving, the suspect told the employee that he had an accomplice in the store who would “take care of business” if they did not wait five minutes before calling police.
Later that same night, police were patrolling the area of 33rd Street and Boulevard for the suspect in the robbery. Police spotted a vehicle driving in an apartment complex parking lot in an area not near any buildings. Police said the vehicle was moving slowly, as if the driver were looking for something.
Police said they found a woman who exited the vehicle talking with the suspect in the alley behind closed businesses in the 3300 block of S. Boulevard. Following a brief foot chase, police arrested the suspect, who was identified by an officer who had seen Walgreens surveillance video of the robbery.
The suspect was arrested on a robbery complaint and transported to the city jail.
