EDMOND —
Edmond administrators are reviewing procedures after a 5-year-old kindergartner strayed away from school and turned up at a local day care facility.
Monday afternoon, the student went to the media center at Northern Hills Elementary, where she was to remain in the after school child care program, said Associate Superintendent Brenda Lyons. It was the first day for the child to do so, Lyons said.
Edmond Police spokeswoman Glynda Chu said the student, who was not identified, instead went via a school bus to a friend’s off-campus day care facility.
At 3 p.m., the student was reported missing, Chu said. Lyons said school employees initiated the action plan and began searching for the student.
Chu said police were called at about 4:30 p.m., and it was all hands on deck for the search, which included checking local day care facilities.
At about 5:30 p.m., the student was located at Kid’s Ink II, 704 W. 18th St., the friend’s day care, Chu said. The missing student was then reunited with her father, Chu said.
“It was a frightening two and a half hours for the school and for the family,” Chu said.
Lyons said administrators regret that the search took as long as it did, and the district is working to ensure that a similar incident does not happen again in the future.
Administrators are reviewing related procedures to ensure child safety, Lyons said. The review includes communicating with elementary principles about the incident, she said.
“Student safety is utmost in our minds,” Lyons said.
