Edmond North educators recognized two cadets, believed to be the only non-athletes in Oklahoma to receive academic scholarships to West Point this year.
Thursday afternoon, Lt. Col. Lester P. Tucker (retired), Edmond North senior aerospace science instructor, and Principal Jason Pittenger recognized Air Force Junior ROTC cadets Wayne Cobb and Daniel Reape, both seniors.
West Point provides a four-year education, which focuses on the leader development of cadets in the academic, military and physical domains, all underwritten by adherence to a code of honor, Tucker said.
An appointment is valued at $400,000 in scholarship money, Tucker said.
At Edmond North, Tucker said, the two cadets are part of a long tradition of appointees to various service academies and colleges, learn the program’s core values — integrity first, service before self, excellence in all they do and personal responsibility.
Tucker said North’s cadets, including these young men, excel both as citizens and as students. These scholarships will provide them with a tremendous engineering background and an opportunity to travel abroad to see various bases, he said.
Pittenger said he loves the fact that the school has an AJROTC program in Edmond that’s one of the best in the nation and moments like this are fruits of educators’ labor.
“It speaks volumes of the kind of kids we have, the kind of program we have, our community, our school district,” Pittenger said. “The excellence is consistent with our mission statement. These two gentlemen embody every bit of that. I’m so thrilled for the kids and their families.”
Both cadets said their time at Edmond North will serve them well at West Point. They look forward to their future experiences.
The OK-081 AFJROTC Wing has long prided itself on being the premier JROTC unit in Oklahoma, and one of the top 5 in the world. The OK-081st also plays an active role in the community. Its various contributions include food and blood drives and reading to elementary school students.

Developer Ron Walters plans to build a group of duplexes and “fiveplexes” for senior citizens. Mon Abri is proposed to be on 87 acres of property on the east side of Broadway, south of Covell Road, said Bob Schiermeyer, city planner. -

City Council approves church remodel
A request by Redeemed Christian Church of God Kingdom Chapel to remodel a facility at 307 E. Danforth for a church was approved recently by the City Council.
“The church wants to rent a 2,302-square-foot space in the office building on the north side of Danforth, east of the convenience store, south of the Timber Ridge Addition,” said Bob Schiermeyer, city planner. “There will be no new construction other than interior remodeling to accommodate the church.
The church does not request changes to the one driveway or sidewalk of the property, Schiermeyer said. No changes will be made to the outside of the two-story brick veneer building. A sprinkler system will not be required. -

Professor: Constitutional heritage can bring sense of belonging to U.S. citizens
Education is fundamental in preparing a citizenry to live under a free constitutional republic, said Kyle Harper, founding director of the Institute for the American Constitutional Heritage at the University of Oklahoma. Harper is also the senior vice provost at OU as well as an associate professor of Classics and Letters.
