EDMOND — Representatives from Discover card surprised Ben Potter and his family Tuesday afternoon with a ceremonial $250,000 check at one of Potter’s favorite restaurants, Billy Sim’s Barbecue.

Potter is a retired auto shop owner and mechanic. He and his wife, Renell Potter, have been Edmond residents for 29 years. Potter has three children, eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

When Potter arrived at Billy Simm’s he had been informed that he had won a prize but was unaware what it was until he was presented with a $250,000 check.

“We tried to get everyone to tell us what we won,” Potter said. “My brother said it was a scam.”

Discover card members earned one entry into the giveaway for every purchase made from October 2012 to December 2012. Potter, a 26-year Discover cardmember, won the grand prize after being entered into the giveaway by making a $34 gas purchase with his Discover card on Oct. 20 at EZ GO Station. Potter was completely unaware he had even entered the giveaway.

“We don’t believe in luck, this is all set up by the Lord,” Potter said.

Potter and his wife haven’t decided how they want to spend their money yet but want to take a vacation to Durango, Colo., and take the train ride to Silverton, Colo.

“We are praying people and we are going to let God decide what we should with the money,” Potter said.
