EDMOND — Both Edmond and Deer Creek school districts have plans in place for the impending icy weather headed this way.
Brenda Lyons, associate superintendent of secondary education and public information officer for the Edmond Public Schools, announced Wednesday afternoon the decision will be made early this morning as to whether or not school will be in session.
“We will put information on Channel 18 and on our Web site whenever we know what is going to happen,” Lyons said. “We can’t let the students out early because some of them may be going home to empty houses.”
Lyons said the district might load the buses 30 minutes early, but that would have to be a serious situation.
“Parents have the right to keep their children at home or pick them up early, and we ask the parents to make the best decision for their child.”
In the Deer Creek district, Lenis DeRieux Winkle, director of personnel & communications, said, “The Deer Creek School District will determine the cancelling of classes late this evening or early in the morning. Please check our Web site as well as the local news stations for updates on school closings. We will continue to monitor the weather in order to make the best decision for our students and staff.”
Francis Tuttle Technology Center, as of Wednesday afternoon, planned to have Thursday morning classes but was canceling Thursday afternoon and evening classes. No decision had been made yet as to Friday classes.
As of Wednesday evening, the University of Central Oklahoma had not canceled classes for today. Spokeswoman Adrienne Nobles said the university might make a decision about 6 a.m. today or as late as 9 a.m. depending on what the weather does.
Oklahoma Christian University also planned to have classes Thursday morning, said Ron Frost, spokesman.
“We are having classes in the morning and will monitor it as the day goes on,” Frost said. The university could close in the afternoon, depending on the weather.
