OKLAHOMA CITY —
November is National Adoption Month and Deaconess Pregnancy and Adoption Services is celebrating 112 years of helping women in unplanned pregnancies and creating families through adoption.
“The trends in adoption change from year to year,” said Executive Director Dierdre McCool. “In recent months, we have received an increase in inquiries related to older child adoption. Relatives who are raising members of their extended family are struggling not only financially but with health issues and are considering open adoption plans for their nieces, nephews and grandchildren.”
An estimated six million unplanned pregnancies occur every year in the United States and over a million are ended via voluntary termination. Fewer than 22,000 infants are given the gift of a family through adoption.
“We have families who have struggled with infertility and want to create a family through adoption. When a mother chooses life for her unborn child and then makes the courageous decision to give her child the gift of a family, many lives are transformed. Adoption weaves so many different lives together — it is a beautiful tapestry.”
Deaconess Pregnancy and Adoption Services was one of the first organizations to provide a safe haven for pregnant women in crisis in the State of Oklahoma. This life-saving mission, known as the Oklahoma Rescue Home, was founded in 1900. DPAS has empowered more than 16,000 women in crisis pregnancies and created more than 5,500 families via adoption. The current mission of DPAS is to transform the lives of children by embracing women in crisis pregnancies and creating families through adoption.
