EDMOND —
One woman is dead after a single-vehicle crash in Logan County Wednesday afternoon. Polly McDaniel, 67, of Guthrie died when the 1997 Jeep Liberty driven by her husband Clinton McDaniel, 69, rolled over while driving north on Midwest Boulevard near Simmons Road.
At about noon the car swerved off the road to the right, then to the left and flipped one and a half times and landed on its top, according to a report from the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.
Trooper Betsy Randolph said the road surface had recently been redone, which made the drop-off a little more sharp.
Polly McDaniel was pinned for about an hour, the report says. Guthrie and Woodcrest Fire departments had to use the jaws of life to get her out, according to the report. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Her husband was treated for minor injuries and released at the scene and refused ambulance services.
“I think he was more shook up than anything else,” Randolph said.
Both Clinton and his wife were wearing seatbelts, according to the report, but airbags did not deploy, even though they were equipped on the car.
The report says the cause of the crash was a “[d]istraction from outside the vehicle.”
Randolph said the driver was looking at the trees and swerved off the road.
Clinton was a member of the Edmond Elks Lodge, he and Polly would often do volunteer work, Randolph said. She said she had met the couple and called them “good people.”
“We don’t know if it could’ve been prevented,” Randolph said. “However we always encourage people to pay particular attention to the road.
“It’s really an unfortunate event.”
