EDMOND —
Sunny skies and warm breezes welcomed Santa Fe High School parade participants and onlookers Wednesday as they experienced a Hollaback Homecoming.
“In our case it (hollaback) means a throwback or calling back to the 1990s as we pay tribute to the Nickelodeon cartoons,” Santa Fe junior Julia Baird said.
With “Slime the Sabercats” their cry, the students were getting ready for their Thursday night homecoming game against Southmoore High School.
“The week has been a lot of fun with decorating the halls and building the floats,” said Christen Bianchi, a junior. “It has brought everybody together as they reminisced about the cartoons and the styles, scrunchies and denim, that everyone wore.”
Although she and her friends admitted they were only 5 in the ’90s.
“Parades are fun,” said junior Chloe Freeman. “Everybody gets pumped up and excited about the game.”
Band members along with 16 organizations, cars with queens and dignitaries rolled through downtown Edmond with the floats featuring cartoons from the ’90s. Winners were announced at the Wednesday night pep assembly.
Cheer placed first with their Powerpuff theme, the Junior Classical League came in second and the Junior Class placed third.
Students from Summit Middle School and Washington Irving Elementary took to the streets with the older students as they raised spirits as well as the noise level.
For the first time the Royalty girls were accompanied by family members as they sat on the backs of the convertibles.
“We decided to do it this way this year because all of the Royalty guys had to be at football practice,” said Student Council co-sponsor Heather Jones. Jones and fellow co-sponsor Shawn Elmore led the parade riding bicycles.
Royalty girls include seniors Meghan Hook, Jenney Huynh, Dannielle Taylor, Megan Turner and Cameerah Graves.
Royalty guys include Dale Jefferson, Phillip Sumpter, Eric Davis, Khari Harding and Trevan Smith.
Junior royalty, king Rhett Adams and queen Ellah Campbell were announced at the pep assembly following the announcement of the king and queen.
“At the game the parents escort their daughters and guys’ names are announced,” Jones said. “Among other activities there will be some sliming going on and fireworks at the end.”

Clean-up continues for Edmond tornado victims
Mid-June is the approximate time that work is expected to be completed in Edmond for replacing nine transmission structures lost in Sunday’s tornado, said Brian Alford, OG&E spokesperson. Repairs could take longer, depending on weather conditions, he added.
Work in Edmond focuses on the Forest Oaks and Thornbrooke additions, both along Bryant Avenue. Twelve homes were damaged in the city by the storm that also dropped hail on northwest Edmond. Major damage impacted three of the homes while the other nine homes had minor damage, said Matt Stillwell, director of the city’s emergency communications and management.
Contract crews from out-of-state are helping OG&E in their restoration effort throughout central and southern Oklahoma, Alford said. -
