Edmond Police cadets aim to improve shooting skills

EDMOND — Edmond’s police cadets, who are more than halfway through their training, sharpened their shooting skills this week.

Thursday afternoon they were at the Police Department’s training site east of Interstate 35 along Danforth. During a chilly overcast afternoon, they used both a shotgun and a handgun as they worked on distance accuracy and fired at a moving target at closer range.

Police Sgt. Jeff Richardson said they passed the mid-term point last week — the department’s in-house academy began in November and it will end on April 6 — and things are going well.

“The cadets are eager to learn and attentive,” Richardson said.

They have been learning law enforcement driver training, technical investigations, Taser use and various criminal investigations during the last few weeks, Richardson said. Coming up they will be learning about building searches, active shooter response, traffic accident response and investigations.

Edmond’s cadets are:

• Matthew Richardson, 24, of Edmond

• Cody Hash, 23, of Edmond

• William Wright, 28, of Edmond

• Jason Lewellyn, 28, of Guthrie

• Colter Morey, 25, of Edmond

• Jonathan Vincent, 24, of Mustang

• Matthew Tipton, 25, of Newcastle

• Roger Shortt Jr., 39, of Edmond

Starting pay for the cadets while in the academy and through the field training program is $41,454. Once they finish the field training and are out on their own it increases to $43,455 annually.

This is Edmond’s second Police Academy. The first was conducted in the summer of 2009.
