City staff and the leadership of the Edmond Softball Association have agreed to delay the opening of the new Edmond Softball Complex until spring, said Larry Stevens, city manager.
“It will allow time for the sod to get established, and also it will allow us to get the lights and the scoreboard installed as well,” Stevens said in an update to the City Council this week. “We anticipate a March dedication or grand opening of this facility.”
The city purchased the park property in 2007 for $1.5 million with money from the city’s 3/4-cent permanent sales tax approved by voters in December 2000 for capital improvements, Stevens said.
The total cost of the project is estimated at $5.2 million to fund four softball fields. Future plans include the installation of four more ball fields at an unspecified date, according to the city.
Work on the complex is almost finished. More softball tournaments in Edmond will result from the complex, located a quarter mile east of Post Road and State Highway 66.
Edmond Adult Softball Association has more than 130 adult softball teams involving 1,500 players, said Harry Kocerek of the Parks & Recreation Board.
