The Oklahoma Department Transportation Commission approved its 8-Year-Plan Monday with $6 billion to improve 2,000 highway and bridge improvement projects to carry Oklahoma into the next decade. Commissioners update the plan every year.
ODOT has reduced the number of structurally deficient highway bridges from 1,168 bridges in 2004 to 556 in 2012. By the end of the decade, all remaining structurally deficient highway bridges will be improved or replaced.
“Thanks to the governor, Legislature and the people of Oklahoma, transportation planning and funding have become top priorities in the past decade,” Executive Director Mike Patterson said. “With this comprehensive eight-year plan, ODOT will continue to address our structurally deficient highway bridges and move Oklahoma over to the list of states with the best bridges in the nation.”
Highlights of the FY 2014-21 Eight-year Construction Work Plan include:
• $6 billion in improvements
• 1,999 total projects
• 924 bridge replacement or major rehabilitation projects
• 657 miles of shoulders and other improvements to two-lane roads
• 552 miles of major improvements to high-volume highways and interstates
Plans for the Broadway Extension/I-235/I-44 interchange reconstruction in Oklahoma City have moved up to 2015. The plan also fully funds the $125 million reconstruction of the I-35/I-240 interchange on Oklahoma City’s southeast side, with the first construction phase set to begin in 2015.
The current project is the second of seven at the Interstate 44/Interstate 235 Broadway Extension interchange and is estimated at $9 million. Construction began in July and is expected to complete in the spring of next year, according to ODOT.
This phase is in the southwest quadrant of the interchange and replaces the eastbound I-44 off-ramp to southbound I-235, according to ODOT. It also includes temporary work to lengthen and add a lane to the current westbound I-44 off-ramp to northbound Broadway Extension.
A new project is the I-35/Waterloo Road Interchange, said Cole Hackett, ODOT spokesperson. This $24 million project is scheduled to go out for bids in 2020 and will completely rebuild the northbound and southbound I-35 bridges over Waterloo Road as well as the ramps to and from I-35 and Waterloo. Waterloo will expand from two to five lanes (two lanes for each direction and a turning lane).
Two S.H. 74 projects to complete the corridor remain scheduled to finish for 2015 and 2016. But the estimated costs have changed slightly, Hackett said.
“The project to widen S.H. 74 from just north of Memorial Road north to Northwest164th and reconstruct the interchanges on that stretch is estimated to cost $26 million and is scheduled to go out for bids in early 2015,” Hackett said.
Plans also call for widening S.H. 74 from Northwest 164th to Northwest 206th streets. Interchanges will be rebuilt along that stretch at a cost estimated at $25.5 million. A bid letting for this project is scheduled in 2016.
An environmental assessment study continues for replacing the Guthrie viaduct, just north of downtown on state Highway 33. A longer bridge will replace the 77-year-old viaduct to avoid flooding in the area.
Bids are scheduled to go out in late 2015 for the project that is estimated to cost $16 million, Hackett said. The $16 million project funded 100 percent by federal funds and is anticipated to take about a year to complete once it starts.
“That has shifted a little bit back,” Hackett said. “We’re still meeting with the state Historic Preservation Society to try to figure out the environmental process.”
One other Logan County project is the U.S. 77 bridge over Cimarron River- scheduled for 2017 and estimated to cost $7 million.
Commissioners also approved the five-year county improvements for the Roads and Bridges Construction Work Plan for FY 2014-18. More than $900 million in dedicated state and federal funds will be going to improve 680 county road and bridge projects statewide.
