Student food drive feeds the hungry

EDMOND — The seventh annual Students Against Hunger food and fund drive, which was coordinated through the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma, raised nearly 230,000 pounds and $57,000, which will provide 475,000 meals to the hungry this winter. In Edmond alone, 10,625 pounds of food and $100 was raised.

Statewide, nearly 250 schools participated in the drive. Schools recognized for raising the most donations include: Bishop McGuiness Catholic High School for raising 49,863 pounds of food and $4,637; Heritage Hall Middle School for collecting 3,031 pounds of food and $4,335; the University of Oklahoma for raising 15,389 pounds of food and $40; and Bethany Earl Harris Elementary for raising 4,323 and $281.21.

“Support in the fight against hunger in Oklahoma is vital now more than ever,” said Rodney Bivens, executive director and founder of the Regional Food Bank. “One in seven Oklahomans struggles with hunger every day. Thanks to these schools, parents and students, more Oklahomans will have food on their table this winter.”

The Regional Food Bank provides enough food to help feed more than 90,000 people each week. The majority of those served by the nonprofit are children, seniors living on fixed incomes and working families who cannot make ends meet. Yet, it is not enough to meet the need.

“The less fortunate are so grateful for the food. Many would go to bed hungry if not for the food drive,” said one partner agency of the Regional Food Bank. “We have been running low on stock these past two months, and the students have supplemented our pantry greatly. This food will get us through the holidays without running out.”

It’s not too late to make a difference this winter. Through Jan. 31, Chesapeake Energy will match all tax-deductible donations made to the Regional Food Bank — up to $1 million. Donations received between now and Jan. 31 will have twice the impact on the fight against hunger. Now, every dollar donated will provide 10 meals to those in need.
