Police seek ID of auto burglary suspect

EDMOND — Police said they need the public’s help in identifying a suspect wanted in an auto burglary in an Edmond grocery store parking lot.

During the afternoon of Feb. 12 Edmond Police Officer Kendall Miller spoke with an auto burglary victim in the parking lot of the Homeland at 1151 N. Bryant Ave., according to a report filed by Officer Miller.

The victim parked her vehicle and entered the store, police said. After about 15 minutes, she returned to find the front passenger side window broken. She said she had left a small shoulder bag on the front passenger floorboard and it was now missing, police said. The bag contained a pink lady’s wallet with two checkbooks.

Nothing else was stolen, police said.

Officer Miller contacted store management and viewed their surveillance video, police said. It showed the victim parking her vehicle and going into the store. A short time later, a gray or light green four-door vehicle drives slowly past the victim’s vehicle. About three minutes later, the vehicle comes back by the victim’s vehicle and stops. A male exits the passenger side of the vehicle, goes over to the victim’s vehicle, returns to his vehicle and leaves.

Surveillance video from other cameras in the parking lot and store show the suspect’s vehicle arriving and parking in front of the store in the fire lane. A white male wearing a black coat, jeans and a red and white hat exits the passenger side and goes into the store. After about 10 minutes, the suspect checks out at a register, returns to the waiting vehicle and then drives to the victim’s vehicle.

Police spokeswoman Glynda Chu said at 3:20 p.m. the window of the victim’s vehicle was smashed and her purse stolen. The suspect later tried to use a credit card from the stolen purse, Chu said.

On Feb. 13, the victim spoke with Police Officer Tim Owen and told him her bank advised her that someone attempted to use her debit card at the Petrol located at I-35 and MLK Boulevard, according to a supplemental report filed by Officer Owen.

The shoulder bag was valued at $100, the lady’s wallet at $25 and the damage to the victim’s vehicle was estimated to be $250, police said.

Chu said police want to remind residents to not leave anything of value in their vehicles. The best defense against these thieves is to not give them the chance to steal anything, she said.

“You can’t even go get a loaf of bread and some milk, go workout, drop off your children a day care or go shopping without potentially being the target of auto burglars,” Chu said.

Anyone with information on the suspect wanted in this case is asked to call Detective Aaron Randall at 359-4447.
