Police arrest July 4 hit-and-run driver suspect

EDMOND — A 55-year-old Edmond woman faces a DUI complaint after striking five cars and leaving the scene of each collision, police said.

On Saturday, police were dispatched to the area of East Fourth Street and South Jackson Street in reference to a blue Jeep striking several cars and leaving the area, according to a police report filed by Officer Milo Box.

Police said they noticed the driver, Mary Jane Baumann, 55, of Edmond, was unsteady on her feet, had slurred speech and bloodshot eyes, according to the report. The suspect told police she had not been drinking, but had taken Vicodin, a pain reliever. She said she had been taking medication for some time and was able to drive.

Police said they located three damaged cars — a 2004 Honda, a 2007 Toyota and a 1999 Chevy Tahoe — in the East Third Street and South Rankin Street area. On South University Drive another car, a 2007 Toyota, had been damaged. A fifth car, a 2004 Toyota, also was damaged, police said.

In all, the cars suffered $10,551 worth of damage, police said.

The suspect was arrested on complaints of felony DUI and for leaving the scene of an accident, and transported to Edmond Medical Center, police said. As of Wednesday, Baumann was in the Oklahoma County jail. Her bond was set at $1,500.

Not every incident leads to a charge under the law. If charges are filed, innocence or guilt is determined by a court of law.
