Soldiers to be honored posthumously

EDMOND — An Edmond soldier killed in Afghanistan will be posthumously inducted into a hall of fame for Oklahoma military officers.

Second Lt. Jered W. Ewy, 33, of Edmond, and 1st Lt. Damon T. Leehan, 30, of Moore, will be inducted into the Oklahoma Officer Candidate School Hall of Fame during a ceremony on Saturday. Both died last year in Afghanistan. Leehan graduated from Edmond North High School.

The ceremony will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Oklahoma National Guard’s Regional Training Institute, Education Center, Room 103, 6500 N. Kelley Ave. The entrance gate is on Kelley just north of 63rd Street.

Ewy died July 29, 2011, while conducting a dismounted patrol in Afghanistan. He was the first of 14 Oklahoma Guardsman killed in combat during the 45th Army Infantry Brigade Combat Team’s deployment in 2011, according to the Oklahoma Military Department.

Ewy, survived by his wife and their infant daughter, was a member of Company B, 1st Battalion, 279th Infantry, 45th IBCT, headquartered in Vinita. He graduated from Oklahoma Officer Candidate School on Aug. 15, 2010, with Class 55A.

Ewy was very involved in Edmond as a gymnastics coach to many children. He graduated from Putnam City North High School and later the University of Central Oklahoma with a degree in criminal justice. He entered the military in 1998, and quickly became an Army Ranger; he was one of the first members in the military to serve in Afghanistan.

Leehan was killed Aug. 14, 2011, when a military vehicle he was riding in struck an improvised explosive device. He was the sixth Oklahoma National Guard soldier killed in combat during the 45th IBCT’s deployment to Afghanistan in 2011.

Leehan, survived by his wife and two young children, was a platoon leader with Company A, 1st Battalion, 179th Infantry, 45th IBCT, headquartered in Edmond. He graduated from Oklahoma Officer Candidate School on Aug. 24, 2008, with Class 53.

The induction ceremony will be in conjunction with the graduation of Oklahoma Officer Candidate School Classes 57 and 57A.

Mid-June is the approximate time that work is expected to be completed in Edmond for replacing nine transmission structures lost in Sunday’s tornado, said Brian Alford, OG&E spokesperson. Repairs could take longer, depending on weather conditions, he added.
