EDMOND —
A review of Edmond’s commercial and residential building permits for 2012 is encouraging, said Larry Stevens, city manager.
“Our single-family construction permits went up about 55 percent from the year before,” Stevens reported to the City Council this week.
In 2012 there were 603 residential building permits with a value of $171.9 million in contrast to 371 permits issued in 2011 with a value of $104 million, according to the Edmond Economic Development Authority.
“The commercial permits also reflect a very healthy increase from 14 the year before to 22 last year,” Stevens said.
The resurgence follows a four-year period of building permits decreasing in scope. Stevens said he believes this 2.5-year trend of growth will continue.
There are 15 business retail alterations going on at Kelly Plaza, said Janet Yowell, executive director of the EEDA.
“The city is starting some alterations on a couple of buildings that they have. They purchased a building at Danforth and Broadway for their IT department,” Yowell said. “It’s a new office building that was built that no one has moved into.”
Meanwhile, revised sales tax figures from the state show the city’s January check is 15.49 percent above the same period a year ago, said Ross VanderHamm, city finance director. Last month’s sales tax receipts showed collections were up 31 percent.
Collections represent the last two weeks of November and the first two weeks of December.
The City Council had budgeted for 3 percent growth in sales tax for the fiscal year. Receipts for sales tax revenue are currently 19.31 percent more than a year ago, VanderHamm said.

More than 120 from OC serve on summer missions
