Special to The Sun
The University of Central Oklahoma’s annual Big Event community service day will start a new tradition of serving Edmond and Oklahoma City residents along with local nonprofit organizations when they send more than 500 students, faculty and staff to serve throughout the Oklahoma City metro on March 9.
“The main purpose of Big Event nationally is to say, ‘Thank You’ to the community that supports the university. So this year, rather than just serving community agencies, we will strive to serve the community members in Edmond and the Oklahoma City metro area,” said Rachel Winters, assistant director of the Volunteer and Service Learning Center.
“We want to thank the community members that have to deal with things like the traffic jam on Second Street or wait in line at Starbucks. For Central students it is no longer just a day of service but a ‘big’ day of thanks.”
Edmond residents and community-based nonprofit organizations can register with the university to serve as host sites for Central’s Big Event volunteers.
The volunteers can help with simple tasks such as cleaning, caring for animals at shelters, painting, raking leaves and other projects that a resident or organization may need help completing.
Interested individuals or organizations should register by 5 p.m. Feb. 22.
