Miller says good-bye

Ward 4 council seat open; applications due by Feb. 23

EDMOND — City Councilman David Miller said good-bye to Edmond Tuesday night. In leaving his third Ward 4 council term, he gave thanks to a community he loves.

The council is accepting letters of interest and résumés from eligible persons who are interested in being appointed to the Ward 4 council position, Mayor Charles Lamb said. The council agreed to vote to fill the vacancy before March 31.

David and his wife Marsha have lived in Edmond for almost 17 years, where Miller has worked in the retail management business. Miller is leaving Edmond for a business opportunity in Louisiana. The Millers have said they still plan to retire in Edmond.

Miller was elected to the council in 2001, 2005 and 2009. Council members serve four-year terms of office.

 “To me personally, seeing him leave this empty seat is a big deal,” Lamb said.

Miller and Lamb have been on the same election cycle since 2001, he added. During that time, Miller demonstrated his desire to make the community a better place, Lamb said.

“Thanks to everybody,” Miller said with his wife and family present. “It was my pleasure to do this, to serve on this council. It was my pleasure to do everything that was asked of me. And, I just wish I could have done more.”

Lamb recalled some late night council meetings with Miller, including one to approve Walmart on Interstate 35, a meeting that lasted until 1 a.m.

“This is a big loss for me personally but I know it’s an opportunity for David,” Lamb said.

Assistant City Manager Steve Commons said Miller’s experience will be missed. Miller had a straight-forward, fair approach with topics going before the council, Commons added.

“He’s always been very helpful to us to try to get the best out of things,” said Bob Schiermeyer, city planner.

Lamb said eligible individuals should submit a letter of interest and résumé by 5 p.m. Feb. 23 to the Edmond City Council, P.O. Box 2970, Edmond, OK 73083. Letters also may be hand delivered to the city manager’s office at the City First Building, 24 E. First.

City Attorney Steven Murdock said the city charter requires a councilmember to be a U.S. citizen. This person must be at least 25 years of age, a freeholder and a resident for at least one year prior to their selection. Also, he or she must be a qualified voter in the city and a resident of Ward 4, which is in northwest Edmond.

Miller was chairman of two committees, Edmond Public Works and Edmond Public Transportation. Other committees on which he serves include the Edmond Senior Foundation Trust and the Oklahoma Association for Public Transportation and was a council liaison to the Capitol Improvements Committee and the Edmond Economic

Development Authority.

“Your direct and honest approach led little doubt about your sincere concern about doing good in the Edmond community,” Lamb said. “The extra time you committed to service was above and beyond the requirements.”
