Evans, Central sign seven new Bronchos

EDMOND — Central Oklahoma men’s basketball coach Terry Evans has announced the addition of seven players to the roster for 2011-12, with the Bronchos signing four talented transfers and three highly-touted state high school recruits.

Marcus Nelson and Ronald Norfleet from Western Oklahoma State College, Spencer Smith from Northern Oklahoma College-Enid and Josh Davis from Cameron are the transfers, while Woodward’s Seth Heckart and Midwest City twins Cortrez and Cortrael Colbert are the prep standouts.

“We expect all seven guys to contribute next year,” said Evans, who led UCO to a 30-4 record and an NCAA Division II Sweet 16 appearance this past season. “It’s a really good group that will help us in a lot of ways, especially defensively, and we’re excited to have them join our program.”

Nelson, a 5-10 guard who helped lead Midwest City to the Class 6A state title in 2008, was a two-year standout at Western. He averaged 11.6 and 3.0 steals a game this season and was also regarded as one of the top defenders in the state juco ranks in earning all-region honors.

Norfleet also played two years for the Pioneers, with the 6-6 forward ranking among the NJCAA national leaders in blocked shots last season with 2.9 a game. The Detroit, Mich. native averaged 17 points and 11 rebounds a game as a senior at Mumford High School.

Smith, a product of Sapulpa High School, is a versatile 6-6 guard-forward who netted 13.5 points and 6.5 rebounds a game in 2010-11 for the Jets at NOC-Enid.

Davis was an All-Stater as a senior in leading Star Spencer High School to the Class 4A state championship. The 6-5 forward played as a freshman at Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College and then averaged 6.8 points and 3.6 rebounds a game at Cameron last year.

Heckart averaged 23.5 points, 5.9 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 4.3 steals a game at Woodward in 2010-11 to earn All-State accolades, finishing his career with a school-record 1,713 points. The 5-11 guard led the Boomers to 61 wins and two Class 4A state tournament appearances the past three years.

Cortrez and Cortrael, a pair of athletic 6-2 guards, guided Midwest City to back-to-back Class 6A state runner-up finishes the last two years.  Cortrez averaged 15.7 points a game last season and was an All-State pick, while Cortrael netted 15.1 points a contest and was an Oklahoman Big-All City selection.

The Bronchos will return five players off last year’s squad that was ranked No. 4 in the final Division II poll — Tyler Phillips, Tucker Phillips, Brent Friday, Victor Driver and Robert Lee.
