UCO men’s golf goes to Division II nationals Monday

EDMOND — Central Oklahoma will be one of the favorites when the No. 1-ranked Bronchos travel to Florence, Ala., Monday for the start of the 2011 NCAA Division II Men’s Golf Championships.

UCO will join 19 other teams in the tournament that gets underway at 7:30 a.m. Monday at the brutal Fighting Joe Course on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at The Shoals. The par-72 course plays to 8,092 yards, highlighted by the 716-yard par-5 12th hole.

Teams will play three rounds of medal play, with those 54 holes determining the individual national champion as well as the top eight teams that will advance to the match play portion of the tournament. Two rounds of match play will be held Thursday, with the championship finals match set for Friday.

The Bronchos have won of nine of 12 tournaments this year and are making their 10th national tournament appearance. UCO won its first Lone Star Conference title since 2003 and followed that up by tying for the Midwest/South Central Regional crown.

Rounding out the 20-team field will be No. 2 Lynn, No. 5 Abilene Christian, No. 6 Barry, No. 10 Cal State-Monterey Bay, No. 11 Barton, No. 12 Sonoma State, No. 13 Columbus State, No. 17 Newberry and No. 18 Central Missouri along with unranked St. Thomas Aquinas, Indiana (Pa.), Wilmington, Concord, American International, Cameron, Missouri-St. Louis, Fort Lewis, Colorado State-Pueblo and Hawaii-Hilo.

Filling out UCO’s five-man team will be senior Colby Shrum, juniors Andrew Green and Baer Aneshansley and sophomores Josh Creel and Chris Muriana.

Shrum, a two-time All-American ranked second in Division II, has won four tournaments and placed in the top five in five others this year.  He has a 70.74 scoring average and has shot under-par in 18 of 34 rounds with 11 rounds in the 60s.

Creel is No. 5 in the individual ratings and carries a 71.45 average.  He’s had 10 top-10 finishes, including five in the top five, and has won two titles while shooting 14 under-par rounds.

The 20th-ranked Green has a 72.41 average with five top-10 placings, while Aneshansley has a 73.97 average and a pair of top-five finishes and Muriana a 75.05 average.
