Bronchos move up after big day from Aneshansley
ALLENDALE, Mich.— Baer Aneshansley fired a two-under-par 69 to spark Central Oklahoma and put the Bronchos in position for a national tournament berth during second-round play in the NCAA Division II Midwest/South Central Regional Tuesday.
UCO shot a seven-over 291 at the par-71 Meadows Golf Club and is sixth in the 20-team tournament with a 586 total heading into Wednesday’s final round. The top-five teams advance to the May 19-22 national tournament in Blaine, Wash., with the No. 4-ranked Bronchos four shots out of fifth and six out of fourth.
Wayne State shot a second-round 284 and leads the tournament at 562, 10 shots ahead of Northeastern State. Ferris State is third at 578, followed by Indianapolis (580), Central Missouri (582) and UCO.
Aneshansley led the way Tuesday, with the Bronchos also getting a 73 from Zach Cleland, a 74 from Colby Shrum, a 75 from Austin Bowman and a 76 from Andrew Green.
“I can’t say enough about the way Baer played today,” UCO coach Dax Johnston said. “He just had a fabulous round that we absolutely had to have. We threw away a few shots that kept us from having a really good round, but we’re right there.
“Our whole season comes down to how we perform tomorrow. Everything we’ve worked for this year has been to get to the national tournament and I have no doubt we’ll come out tomorrow and play well.”
Aneshansley, who shot a 74 in Monday’s first round, birdied his second hole – the par-4 11th – and then reeled off six straight pars before bogeying No. 18 to make the turn at even-par 35. The Clinton sophomore made five consecutive pars on the back nine before finishing with three birdies and a bogey for his two-under round that moved him to 10th in the individual standings with a 143 total.
Cleland birdied the par-4 18th hole – his ninth -- to make the turn at one-over and kept it there until bogeying his final hole for a 73. Shrum had a second straight 74 when he bogeyed two of his last three holes.
Bowman got off to a tough start and was four-over at the turn before playing his final nine holes even-par.

Eagles lay an egg in SAC Tournament opener
All Dan Hays could do is scratch his head after the Oklahoma Christian men’s basketball team walked off the court Thursday night at the Sawyer Center. A pair of lengthy scoring droughts at the end of both halves was too much for the Eagles to overcome as they were bounced in the first round of the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament with a 67-44 loss to John Brown.
“I feel like after coaching 40 years I’d have an answer but I really don’t,” Hays said. “Our guys were stale and sluggish and it’s not because we’re practicing that hard.” -
Rogers State bounces Lady Eagles in first round
The Oklahoma Christian University women have struggled to find consistency on offense all season long and again found themselves battling through lengthy cold spells in the first round of the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament on Thursday afternoon at the Sawyer Center. The Lady Eagles made several runs at Rogers State University in the second half but could never close the gap as they were eliminated with the 60-55 loss.
“We had several places where we made a run to come back from 10 down but we just couldn’t quite get over the hump,” OC coach Stephanie Findley said. -
West Texas A&M stuns Bronchos
Free throws were the difference and the biggest came with just 1.8 seconds left to play as No. 25-ranked Central Oklahoma was stunned by West Texas A&M 80-79 in the opening round of the Lone Star Conference Men’s Basketball Championship late Wednesday night.
The Bronchos missed 17 foul shots — hitting just 21-of-38 — while the Buffs made 11 of their last 12, including the biggest one by Nick Burns
Burns was fouled 35 feet from the basket with the two teams deadlocked at 79 and he made the first charity shot to break the tie before missing the second. UCO couldn’t get off a shot before the final buzzer and the upset was complete.
The LSC North Division champion Bronchos, who beat WTAMU 95-64 in Edmond on Jan. 9, fell to 22-6 and will find out Sunday if they will receive an at-large bid into the NCAA Division II national tournament.

This is the Bronchos (21-6) third straight 20-plus win season, with just six 20-win seasons in the schools history. They will face Abilene Christian tonight at 6. ACU (17-10) defeated the Bronchos earlier in the season 81-80, winning on a last-second shot. -
Eagles looking for hat trick against John Brown
Dan Hays knows the old cliché that it’s hard to beat a team three consecutive times. And it’d be tough for the Oklahoma Christian University men’s coach to find a more fitting scenario than today’s Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament opener against John Brown University.
“John Brown is similar to us, they have good shooters, a good post player in Davaughn Jackson and we both play a similar style,” Hays said. “Historically we’ve played a ton of close games against (John Brown) and my guess is it’ll come down to wire again.” - More Local College Headlines
