Bronchos head to national tourney

UCO wins LSC Championships for automatic berth

INDIANAPOLIS — Lone Star Conference champion Central Oklahoma will make its seventh appearance in the NCAA Division II Women’s Soccer Championship this week after the Bronchos were named the No. 6 seed in the South Central Regional during Monday evening’s selection show.

UCO earned the league’s automatic berth into the 48-team national playoffs with Sunday’s shootout victory over West Texas A&M in the LSC Tournament finals and will travel to San Antonio, Texas for the first two rounds of the six-team South Central Regional.

The Bronchos (14-6-2) will take on third-seeded St. Edward’s (15-3-1) in a first-round game Friday at a time to be determined, with the winner advancing to meet second-seeded Incarnate Word (15-2-3) Sunday. UCO opened the season on the road against those two teams, falling to UIW 2-1 and to SEU 2-0.

Nebraska-Omaha will meet Truman State in another first-round South Central Regional contest Friday in Canyon, Texas, with the winner taking on top-seeded WTAMU Sunday.

The regional finals and quarterfinals will be held Nov. 20-22, followed by the Final Four in Tampa, Fla. Dec. 3-5.

“It’s great to be in the national tournament again and we’re looking forward to seeing what we can do this week,” said head coach Mike Cook, who has a 188-60-14 record in 12 years as the only coach in school history. “We’re playing with a lot of confidence right now and feel we can compete with anybody we go against.”

UCO is in the national tournament for the seventh time, having previously qualified in 2000, ‘02, ‘03, ‘05, ‘06 and ‘07. The Bronchos have a 3-4-2 playoff record, making it to the Sweet 16 in their last appearance in 2007 before losing a 1-0 decision to Incarnate Word in the regional finals.

  • devanwhite.jpg Eagles lay an egg in SAC Tournament opener

All Dan Hays could do is scratch his head after the Oklahoma Christian men’s basketball team walked off the court Thursday night at the Sawyer Center. A pair of lengthy scoring droughts at the end of both halves was too much for the Eagles to overcome as they were bounced in the first round of the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament with a 67-44 loss to John Brown.
“I feel like after coaching 40 years I’d have an answer but I really don’t,” Hays said. “Our guys were stale and sluggish and it’s not because we’re practicing that hard.”

The Oklahoma Christian University women have struggled to find consistency on offense all season long and again found themselves battling through lengthy cold spells in the first round of the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament on Thursday afternoon at the Sawyer Center. The Lady Eagles made several runs at Rogers State University in the second half but could never close the gap as they were eliminated with the 60-55 loss.
“We had several places where we made a run to come back from 10 down but we just couldn’t quite get over the hump,” OC coach Stephanie Findley said.

  • West Texas A&M stuns Bronchos

Free throws were the difference and the biggest came with just 1.8 seconds left to play as No. 25-ranked Central Oklahoma was stunned by West Texas A&M 80-79 in the opening round of the Lone Star Conference Men’s Basketball Championship late Wednesday night.
The Bronchos missed 17 foul shots — hitting just 21-of-38 — while the Buffs made 11 of their last 12, including the biggest one by Nick Burns
Burns was fouled 35 feet from the basket with the two teams deadlocked at 79 and he made the first charity shot to break the tie before missing the second. UCO couldn’t get off a shot before the final buzzer and the upset was complete.
The LSC North Division champion Bronchos, who beat WTAMU 95-64 in Edmond on Jan. 9, fell to 22-6 and will find out Sunday if they will receive an at-large bid into the NCAA Division II national tournament.

  • Eagles looking for hat trick against John Brown

Dan Hays knows the old cliché that it’s hard to beat a team three consecutive times. And it’d be tough for the Oklahoma Christian University men’s coach to find a more fitting scenario than today’s Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament opener against John Brown University.
“John Brown is similar to us, they have good shooters, a good post player in Davaughn Jackson and we both play a similar style,” Hays said. “Historically we’ve played a ton of close games against (John Brown) and my guess is it’ll come down to wire again.”
