A helmet likely prevented a motorcycle driver from suffering more injuries in a collision with an SUV, police said.

Tuesday morning, both northbound and southbound lanes in the 14000 block of North Kelly Avenue were blocked for about 30 minutes while responders worked the scene of the crash, said Jenny Monroe, spokeswoman for the Edmond Police Department.

Monroe said the motorcycle driver, a 20-year-old male, was traveling north on Kelly when he was struck by a Kia SUV leaving the Transformation Fitness parking lot. Monroe said there were injuries inside the vehicle as well. Two people were transported from the scene to a local hospital.

Monroe said citations will be issued, but information on specifics was not immediately available.

The motorcycle driver was wearing a helmet, which likely kept his injuries from being more serious, even though he did suffer serious injuries to his leg, Monroe said.

“This crash is another example where wearing a helmet makes a huge difference in the outcome if you unfortunately are in a crash.”

No other information was immediately available.
