EDMOND — Local Catholics are supporting “40 Days for Life,” a pro-life campaign with a vision to access God’s power through prayer, fasting and peaceful vigil to end abortion.

The U.S. Conference of Bishops’ pastoral plan contains four major “pillars” the leaders have set as elements necessary for authentic Catholic pro-life efforts in America — public policy, public information and education, pastoral care and prayer.

Communities across North America and around the world are supporting “40 Days for Life,” which began March 5 — Ash Wednesday — and ends April 13 — Palm Sunday. Activities include peaceful prayer vigils outside Planned Parenthood locations and public education.

St. John the Baptist Catholic Church of Edmond Pastoral Associate Harry Kocurek said a church youth group made a field of crosses placed on church grounds near the corner of Ninth and Boulevard.

A sign standing amongst the crosses urges readers to choose life and states 3,315 abortions per day are performed in the United States. That number of crosses are planted at Ninth and Boulevard as a visual reminder of the issue. The display also contains the verse “Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you” (Jeremiah 1:5). Another sign urges passers-by to pray to end abortion.

St. John’s has been praying for individuals impacted by abortion, for a change of heart, Kocurek said.
